Our Interview with Alejandro Monteverde
With a movie release only days away we couldn’t believe we were going to get a chance to speak with Alejandro Monteverde the director of Little Boy.
I had butterflies in my stomach when the phone rang, my son and I had watched the trailers and he helped me come up with questions, he is looking forward to seeing the film as much as I am.
We wanted to know where the story of Little Boy came from and what inspired this tale of believing in the impossible.
The answer had many layers, each revealing more a little more insight into the film.
Alejandro said, “Everything started when I set out to explore themes. In the beginning I decided that I wanted to tell the ultimate underdog story.”.
Alejandro recognized that the lives of children involve limited resources and the need for support from adults, making them vulnerable. In developing the character of a child, one that had no friends and whose limited size earned him the nickname, Little Boy, Alejandro identified the most valuable element of the child’s world, his relationship with his father.
Now the conflict. What if this very small child loses his greatest, most valuable gift, his father. And, what if he loses it to something big, like war, the greatest war ever, WWII.
Alejandro added, “What if we have the smallest child, the tiniest kid in the town trying to face the greatest challenge of all time, which is World War II?” and that is the inspiration behind Little Boy.
The setting of the film, the 1940’s, was also brought to life under the direction of Alejandro Monteverde, and was influenced by the illustrations of Norman Rockwell.
My favorite quote from the interview is when discussing the themes of Little Boy, Alejandro suggested, “I don’t like to give answers, I like to present questions. I don’t like to impose a theme, I like to propose a theme.”
Little Boy although a period piece, explores many of themes relevant today: faith, the home-front during war, racism, discrimination, and the will of man.
