Is your grill dug out? We decided to welcome Spring Training by grilling some traditional Fenway Franks by Kayem. These are a a family favorite in our home – the kids just love them and we paired them up with some potato salad, coleslaw and baked beans – a little taste of New England at home. So even though opening day is over a month away and there is still 6 feet+ of snow on the ground we are #GrillIntheChill
A Family Tradition
Kayem has been a family favorite in our home for generations – all because of a story my father told me that happened when he was 5 years old.
My grandparents had taken a chance to start their own boat building business here on the North Shore of Massachusetts. Times were VERY tight. My father told me for Christmas that year he got a box of chocolates from Santa that he saw his parents get from a local business owner – that was all.
A man had come into the shop to take a look at a boat and could see that things were pretty tough. My father mentioned that he appeared to be very friendly and even spoke to my dad who was in the shadows of the shop. The next day the man returned, this time not to talk about boats but to bring my father and his parents some food. That food happened to be Kayem Hot Dogs. The man worked at Kayem foods and could see that the family was struggling. My father swore to me that those Kayem hot dogs were the reason that his family made it through that first winter as a small boat builder and to this day our family is a Kayem family.
Our son even wrote a school paper on my father’s story, the assignment was to write about a food or recipe that has been in your family for years, and our son wrote about Kayem hot dogs.
