Maine Travel Ideas:York and Ogunquit Maine
Bonnie and I love to travel. Collectively, we’ve been around the world. Now that our lives are busy with family life, our travel is mainly grounded in local travel destinations. Both of us LOVE Maine. There’s something so special about it and we find ourselves there often – it’s only under a half hour to the seacoast boarder.
We have selected our favorite stops along the way – come along on our adventure.
Stonewall Kitchen – World Headquarters
There is something in the air in Maine. Fabulous businesses come from the simplest of ideas and Stonewall Kitchen sure has an AMAZING story. I’m so fortunate to live close to the world headquarters. The experience is all about Maine hospitality, wholesome and delicious foods, and an ambiance you just can’t enjoy long enough.
If you find yourself in Maine, be sure to make Stonewall Kitchen a stop for lunch, or reserve a spot in the cooking school (amazing!) and spend a few moments viewing the production line. I enjoy supporting local business and this is one you can feel good about.
The wonderful outdoor setting is beautiful and there’s plenty of outdoor eating and sitting areas to enjoy the gardens. Many visitors have their dogs outside sitting along their tables. I love that!
Once inside, the displays are something to be seen. Each vignette is carefully designed for each item they would like to complement. Lemon Curd was the focus of my favorite…perfect for hosting a Tea Party at home!
Stonewall Kitchen is known for their gift baskets. If you ever need the perfect gift, I would look NO further. I personally love the Nantucket Basket on the bottom left, if anyone is ever wondering which one I love and NEED.
The in -store café is AMAZING. You can get lobster rolls, to delicious sandwiches and pastries. It has a definite European feel and I highly recommend sitting outside on the patio in warm weather. Simply delightful.
Everything about Stonewall Kitchen is about New England beauty. I hope you enjoyed a peak into my travel diary about Stonewall Kitchen.
Perkins Cove Candies – Perkins Cove, Ogunquit, Maine
Down the street from Stonewall Kitchen Outlet is Ogunquit and my favorite candy store.
New England candy stores, perched by the ocean, have a very special appeal all to themselves. Everything tastes and looks SO much better than buying it from your local grocery store.
As a kid, I would get a dollar while on vacation – I’d run to the local penny candy store and fill that bag to the brim! Those were the days. You can still do this in Ogunquit at Perkins Cove Candies. Ogunquit is a gorgeous seaside town. Make it a spot to visit this summer – Just an hour and half north of Boston.
There you have it! A very cool candy shop right in the heart of Perkins Cove, Ogunquit, Maine!
Barnacle Billy’s Lunch in Pictures, Ogunquit, Maine
Barnacle Billy’s has been a family favorite for OVER 40 years! It’s in it’s 53nd season this year. Yes, I’ve been eating there ALL my life and find it more of a nostalgic place than the cuisine at this point, but the food is traditional seacoast fare – DELICIOUS!
Typical eats you ask?
It’s the usual – Lobster Roll, Steamers, Clam Chowder and Lemonade. There is something magical about the lemonade. I can’t put my finger on it, but it’s so refreshing and yummy. Not too sweet, JUST right!
The Lobster Rolls are on the smaller side, but filled with prime lobster meat, chips and pickles. Then there are the STEAMERS….we call them ‘Steeeema’s’ with our best Bostonian accent….hee hee. Clams, hot water dip to clean off the sand, and piping hot butter bath. YUM. My daughters are THIRD generation Barnacle Billy’s fans. On two separate occasions we have sat DIRECTLY next to President George Bush and his family. They sit at the corner table on the deck – surrounded by secret service. It’s really cool.
The Bush estate is up the coast in nearby Kennebunkport – a quick boat ride away. You can see photos of the Bush family throughout the restaurant. The staff is all young and fun. The service here is impeccable. You order at the counter, and they call your number when your meal and drinks are ready. There is a full bar service here as well. Gorgeous outdoor seating at Barnacle Billy’s. We are often found outside eating on the lovely deck. The view of Perkins Cove, in Ogunquit, Maine simply takes my breath away – even after 40 years of beholding it with my eyes.
We hope you liked our Maine ideas! We will continue to post more.
