Win 2 Tickets to the 2014 Topsfield Fair
A Little Walk Down Memory Lane
Mom’s Lifesavers is giving away 2 tickets for the 2014 Topsfield Fair. See the entry form at the bottom of this post.
A Family Tradition
The year was 1949 and my great grandmother, Marie Wallace Bashaw of Turkey Hill Road in Newburyport entered her crocheted hankie work and a queen size afghan she crocheted to the Topsfield Fair.
Not only was she the winner of the 1949 Best of Fair Crochet Trophy, presented by the Essex Agricultural Society, she also received the State Award, purple ribbon for the afghan.
Our family still holds Great Grammy Bashaw’s work near and dear to our hearts. Just one look at her work and I stare in amazement. I consider the patience and attention to detail she had, not to mention skill to create these works of art.
Do you have a seasonal fair favorite?
Our family has gone to the Topsfield Fair for as long as I can remember.
When I was little our dad would leave work early one day during the fair to take us after school. Our adventure would always start with a walk through the chickens – I swear we would spend an hour waiting and watching to catch a glimpse of a chick hatching. There was always the visit to the vegetables and the giant pumpkin. I milked my first cow at the Topsfield Fair, and come to think of it, my first and last goat too.
There was always a few rounds of Dan the Candy Man as part of our evening along with tossing dimes onto glass plates, ash trays and beer mugs, ahhh memories!
Today’s Fair
I still enjoy walking the fair with my family visiting the large pumpkin (always hoping that it will be a record breaker!) getting a piece of fried dough or a candy apple.
This year the fair will be 196 years old. Here’s to many more years to come!
