Boston Ballet’s Nutcracker Holiday Performances
This was Our first year attending the Boston Ballet’s performance of The Nutcracker – Can you believe it?
That’s right, I have lived in New England my entire life and never have seen the Boston Ballet’s performance of The Nutcracker – it was magical.
After picking up our tickets we were thrilled to get our Nutcracker crowns and even have a photo opportunity with performers. Everything in the Opera House was spectacular – the lights, decor, mood – it truly felt like Christmas was happening all around us.
There is still time to get tickets and experience the magic with your family!

I can’t tell you how excited we are to see the Boston Ballet’s, Mikko Nissinen’s The Nutcracker at the Boston Opera House. Our children are now the perfect age for us to go as a family and make a new holiday seasonal memory.
Our son has always collected Nutcrackers and has quite the collection that we bring out this time of year – he is especially excited to see the performance and our daughter is looking forward to the dancing and costumes – its right up her alley! As a parent, I’m so happy that they are excited to go and experience the ballet, something I never had the chance to do as a child, maybe this will become our new family tradition.

About Mikko Nissinen’s The Nutcracker
BOSTON, MA – Mikko Nissinen’s The Nutcracker returns to the stage November 28 -December 31 at the Boston Opera House. One of two spectacular commissions for Boston Ballet, Robert Perdziola’s original Nutcracker sets and costumes return to the stage following the world premiere of his creations for Swan Lake (October 2014). Following its world premiere in 2012, The Nutcracker gained record-breaking popularity, dazzled audiences, and was hailed as “elegant and theatrically striking”, by The New York Times.
Artistic Director Mikko Nissinen and Robert Perdziola chose to set the new production in the early 1800s, in what many know as the Jane Austen era. Over 350 costumes were created, each handmade and custom painted to match Perdziola’s exquisite designs. The innovative sets contain extensive amounts of moving scenery, making the entire production a truly magical experience.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled with this production,” says Nissinen. “It’s a sensational journey for those experiencing it for the first time, and for those who have been coming to The Nutcracker for generations.”
This year’s production features the full company at its largest size of 60 Company dancers, 9 Boston Ballet II dancers, and over 250 Boston Ballet School students. The 44-performance run will feature many never-before-seen casts, showcasing the vast talent within the Company, and providing many opportunities for dancers to shine in Soloist and Principal roles. Each performance will be accompanied by P.I. Tchaikovsky’s renowned score, performed by the Boston Ballet Orchestra.
Mikko Nissinen’s The Nutcracker is based on the libretto by Alexandre Dumas, père titledThe Tale of the Nutcracker, which is adapted from E. T. A. Hoffmann’s story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. The story follows the wondrous journey of young Clara, who receives a nutcracker as a gift at her family’s Christmas Eve party. Later that night, her nutcracker magically transforms into a handsome prince, who leads her through an enchanted forest and on to the Nutcracker Prince’s Kingdom. This timeless classic is presented by State Street Corporation.
All performances of The Nutcracker will take place at The Boston Opera House, November 28 – December 31, 2014.
