About Instacart in Boston
Instacart is the only service that can deliver groceries from multiple local stores within an hour, and is often less expensive for consumers than a personal, time-consuming trip to the grocery store. Customers can choose from a variety of local stores including Safeway, Whole Foods, Shaw’s and Costco, and can mix items from multiple stores into one order. Instacart is disrupting the traditional grocery delivery business with its approach, which utilizes a crowd sourced model for Personal Shoppers and needs no warehouses or trucks.
Instacart Model
Originally launched in San Francisco and later expanded to Chicago, Instacart has disrupted the traditional grocery delivery space with its crowdsourced labor force dubbed “Personal Shoppers” who shop for and deliver grocery orders using their own vehicles in as little as one hour. This eliminates the need for costly infrastructure such as warehouses, trucks and full-time drivers. Instacart is not affiliated with the stores; its model is to connect customers with Personal Shoppers who shop on their behalf.
Instacart founder and CEO Apoorva Mehta said the company has experienced swift growth in Boston since its December launch, with sales growing by 30 percent weekly as an increasing number of people switch to Instacart for their weekly grocery shopping. Instacart decided to add Whole Foods delivery after being deluged with customer requests, and conducting a survey that found 73 percent of Boston customers wanted it. “Whole Foods delivery has been our #1 request from customers,” said Mehta. “We’ve had great success delivering from Whole Foods Market in Chicago and San Francisco, and know it will be a great addition to our Boston service”

Our ‘Wicked Awesome’ Experience with Instacart in Boston

Mr. Magoo marvels at his ‘birthday’ treats delivered to the door. Owner, Eric was thrilled with the service and was able to secure ‘brownie-points’ from his rescue dog!
My friend, Eric most graciously tested out a $35 gift certificate from Instacart to try this service for me. He’s a busy guy and he usually enjoys his evening out in Boston, but took the time to set up an account, order, and be available at his home to receive the delivery. I asked Eric a few questions about his experience:
Is the website easy to navigate? “Yes, it’s a very simple system to use, it’s way easier than Peapod on my opinion.”
Who did you order from? “I ordered from Shaws.”
How was the delivery? Was it on time? “To be perfectly honest, I chose a delivery time in the middle of Boston rush-hour, not thinking that my delivery may not get to me at the time I requested. Not only was the delivery on-time, they called me on the way to tell me they were on their way through traffic.”
Was the delivery person helpful and friendly? “They were VERY friendly and helpful, I felt a little bad that they had to drive in Boston traffic, but they didn’t even bat an eye at it!”
Will you be a customer of Instacart? “Absolutely, I will be recommending it to my friends in the Boston area for sure. They give me nice incentive to tell everyone through a cool referral service!”
