Strawberry Picking Season Is Here!
Get Picking – It’s Time!
It’s a short season here in New England – now is the perfect time to take the kids out and get picking. We love this time of year, so many farmer’s markets starting up and strawberry festivals going on. Check with your local farm to see if they offer pick your own strawberries, there is nothing better than fresh picked.
Check out these links to find information on local farms in your area from where, when and what they picking!
Here are a few tips to make your trip a success.
- Bring smaller containers for your kids to pick into
- Goal Set an objective for just how much you want to pick – picking your own cans save you money but not if you over pick or any goes to waste
- Plan on freezing extras – have some freezer storage bags or containers ready to go when you get home
- Water Bring some bottled water with you and a colander. Just in case there isn’t a faucet or hose at the field you will be able to rinse and clean a few berries for the ride home
- Bug spray and sunblock. Bringing both and applying before you get in the field will make for a great day

Strawberry Picking – You Can Do It!
We did at Lavigne Strawberry Farm in Sanford, Maine. Lavigne’s generally opens around June 24 call to check before you head there, just in case! (207-324-5497)
Lavigne’s Strawberry Farm is located on Whichers Mill Road, Sanford, Maine. This ‘off the beaten path’ location offers family friendly strawberry picking over a massive strawberry field!
The ‘vintage’ sign welcomes you. You can drive your car right down into the field (marked by signs) and park. TIP – There is a portable toilet located on the field – just in case.
Our family was on a mission – get enough berries for a variety of jams and food gifts as well as ‘freeze’ some of summer’s flavor for those winter months. Mission accomplished at Lavigne’s!
The strawberries were abundant – quart containers were available for $.25 or you could purchase a ‘box’ for $1.00 – or you can always bring your own container. The friendly staff at Lavigne’s will weigh your container and mark it for you.
We found plenty and more on the way – you still have time to get out there and pick with your family. We saw so many generations picking together – so many family memories being made.
