The Rockery in Topsfield, MA
Just what a family needs to get in touch with nature
Looking for the perfect day trip as part of your April Vacation ‘Staycation’ – we’ve got it! The Rockery is the place to be! Located within the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary in Topsfield, Massachusetts.
Our family has a family membership with the Audubon of Massachusetts – its a family pass that we use quite a bit during the year. It provides free entry and parking at locations all around Massachusetts and there is always something to see and do.
What to Bring
- Grab your camera – the scenery is incredible! Photographing nature is a great hobby for ALL ages.
- Wear walking shoes, sneakers – anything that really supports your foot – stay away from sandals on this little adventure
- Bug spray – hey sometimes you just need it
- Sunscreen and a hat
- Ticks – stay on the marked trails but be mindful – you are in nature. Worried? Wear lightweight pants and tuck them into your socks.
- Snacks and water
- Field guide – a great way to ‘identify’ what you see and find!
- Birdseed – yes, we brought a small amount of birdseed and were visited by some very friendly chickadees
A Family Favorite
Our family loves the Rockery – it is part of the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary in Topsfield, Massachusetts – built in 1905 this location is filled with narrow rock and cave like passages all brought in by man and made entirely from imported stone – it overlooks water and is lined with rhododendrons.
It is only a short walk from the parking lot and includes some very scenic views.
The kids will love the wildlife – it is everywhere – just stand or sit still and listen – you’ll be surprised at just how many birds you will hear or frogs croaking and splashing.
Up Close With Nature
We brought some bird seed which we placed on our hands – some brave chickadees even stopped by for a quick bite!
